They never knew for sure what happened to him. They knew he was at work in San Francisco and that is where one of the nuclear blasts took place.

shareActually, the phone rings when the first alerts come over the TV. Carol answers, pauses, then says, "Tom . . ." At that point the nuclear flash is seen through the window and the phone goes dead. Although she leaves him a note telling him they are at the Abhart's, she knows he's not coming back.

I haven't watched the movie in a long time, but SPOILER-
I believe that at some point the mother needs batteries and before she takes them out she listens to the answering machine tape of his message. We hear what we first heard before the bright light occurred. But she hears the second message from him and during this, he screams. Having heard this, she now knows he died while trying talk to her.

Close. We don't hear anything we've heard before. We hear a new message saying "Double scratch, I have to stay in San Francisco after all." We assume he died after about 11 days because that's how long it has been when they show his home movie footage. Home movie footage foreshadows death.
