If this film were made today, who would you cast?

Aurora Greenway: Annette Bening
Emma Horton: Natalie Portman
Garrett Breedlove: George Clooney
Flap Horton: Ryan Gosling
Sam Burns: Hugh Laurie (a bit old but I think he'd work)
Patsy Clark: Amanda Seyfried

Note: Debra Winger is now 57 years old, around the same age Shirley Maclaine was when she played Aurora.

As an aside, Zooey Deschanel is the spitting image of Debra Winger at that age.

If you don't like the show, stop watching it!

She really is! Harrison Ford could do Garrett. The actresses people have listed for Emma are too pretty. Debra Winger wasn't conventionally pretty, and I haven't read the book, but I got the impression that Emma wasn't either. When Aurora tells her she's not special enough to survive a bad marriage, it pretty much drives that point home. There aren't many young actresses who aren't breathtaking. Jennifer Lawrence could probably pull it off though. And I love the idea of Hugh Laurie as Sam, although he probably is too old.

casting for a new one .......

( wont be as good, ever since cell phones exist in movies, never a remake can be made accurately)

this is tricky.

I read some of the previous choices---- I could see some of them but some just were not the essence of what the character made the audience feel.

ps. DO NOT EVER EVER CAST SOMEONE IN A REMAKE BASED ON LOOKS ALONE!! stupid idiots would think this way. go watch Ted or something.

what i do is I picture the named actress performing a poignant scene and then i decide if they can pull it off or not. I dont thnk Natalie Portman can be Emma in the scene being frustrated with the kids or feeling like she is failing her kids by dying etc in her bye speech..also wingers cool sly but vulnerable reaction to Flaps discretions etc. portman isnt that. Maybe bc Winger is so quirky and her body mannerisms is what makes her style not the look.

then you have to picture Flap and Emma scenes. no to Elisabeth Olsen altogether , this isnt safe haven or some *beep* nicholas sparks book movie. ugh.

Aurora has to be right or it is just another overbearing over dramatic mother daughter movie. no thank you diane keaton and mandy moore lol.

Meryl can play exasperated but devilishly funny like Aurora. But McClaine is so dry and so knowledgeable of herself that who else can portray that In Aurora. Annette Benning i can see i really can. but somethings' missing.....

the Garret choices are okay. remember the audience has to sort of like this guy, but he isnt the main focal point either. love Robert Downey Jr he can play shmuck and likable watchable all at once. But remember garrets an Astronaut, not too much of a has-been not too much of a lush but has to be so in-effected by others emotions that he is that full of himself but then tops it with a slight chivalrous manly side that makes Aurora believabley vulnerable and can embrace her.

do not cast Claire Danes in either role she is the wrong kind of portrayal trust me. i am finding her best in ANgelina jolie roles, spy films and guns. lets put claire danes in that.

i think Emma needs to be slightly more desperate of herself but also completely aware that what she does, what is her. all her. she is separate from her mom and flap but she is frustrating too.

Emma is the hardest to cast. I almost hate all actresses in her age group.

I was closin in on another BarBarian!
