I figured dogs could sense who's alien and who isn't. Maybe they figured it would cause trouble and lead Charles to Margaret.

Probably this, or maybe they just didn't like dogs.

Yea, I thought it was the 'sense' thing too. The dog started growling as soon as they met the lead alien from whom the professor was renting a room.
