Whats better saturday night fever or staying alive?
I think both are very good films. What do you guys think?

This has to be one of the silliest boards on IMDB. People here are trying to compare Saturday Night Fever vs. Staying Alive? SNF was a true original story that inspired a generation. It had great music, great dancing, and urban grittiness of NYC in the 70's. Staying Alive was a dog turd that had none of the above. The only reason it made money was because it cashed in on the success of SNF.

The funny part is the movie was actually one of the highest grossing movies of 1983, but that was only due to Saturday Night Fever's popularity. The story or the music come nowhere near matching Fever. The music is completely forgettable 80's pop and the story was just an excuse to get to the forgettable dance scenes. Saturday Night Fever is a classic that will be remembered for years and years to come. Staying Alive is the forgettable afterbirth.

I do have to disagree with you on the music for Staying Alive, I like that soundtrack a lot, but it's definitely not in the same league as the classic Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, but still a good effort by the Bee Gees and Frank Stallone.
yea but you have to admit staying alive tried to be a good sequel. there didnt need to be a sequel but if they wanted to broadway was the best idea because in the end of the first he stays in manhattan so theres nothing else they can really do with Tony Manero other than trying to get in broadway and the dancing at the end of staying alive I thought was really good. also this was a much better sequel than grease 2. at least this one had John Travolta.
I give Saturday Night Fever a 10/10 and staying alive a 10/10 but this is just my opinion.
xchris 10/10 for Staying Alive?????????????? It's a guilty pleasure film, some fun scenes in it, very good soundtrack, but come on! rating it a 10 lol.
I rate it a 6.5, and that's from a closet fan of it, and that's being generous. To compare it to the classic iconic cultural changing Saturday Night Fever, is a crime against the cinematic world.
Yea I know there is not a huge story to this film but I think its entertaining and is way better than grease 2 this one at least had John Travolta reprising his role as Tony Manero, but like I said this is just my opinion and agree with what your saying.

I'm throughly confused why you keep comparing this film to Grease 2-the OP asked whether people prefer, "Staying Alive' or "Saturday Night Fever". I suppose it's possible that unless one was around in the 1970's, it might be difficult to fully appreciate how well "Saturday Night Fever" captured the the mid-70s zeitgeist. Dark, intense and moody, brilliantly written and directed with one of the most amazing soundtracks of all time. As corny as it sounds, this movie reflected and affected a generation. "Staying Alive" didn't capture anything beyond a glimpse of 1980's laughable fashions and horrendous choreography. The only shining light in the film in Cynthia Rhodes performance.

Not even going to get into comparing the two films because that would be silly. The original is a classic, Tony and his friends were idiots that liked to drink, drug, screw and dance! Nothing wrong with that when you're 19. That said, I could never fully understand the hatred for the sequel. I liked the film as it showed that Tony had grown up. He got outta Brooklyn and even has a serious relationship with a woman. Plus he got to boink Fiona Hughes! Then he got to live his dream as a dancer on B'way. Way to go Manero.
sharePseudoFilmCrtic, I can understand you not liking SA for many reasons, but not liking it because the old Tony Manero from the first film didn't show up doesn't make any sense, the whole point of the story was that the character had changed and evolved into a better person, in some whys he still had a long why to go, but he had made tremendous strides in his life.
shareI am fine with a character going through changes - Tony needed to mature and move on from where he grew up. My issue is that they took away all his quirks, what made him human in the first film. Kind of like what happened to Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop III - he was no longer the smart-ass cop from Detroit. He started to fit in the environment of Beverly Hills - hell, NO! With Tony Manero, there was little in the nature of the character from the first film - it could have been any young dancer looking to make it in Broadway. I just never believed that Tony would have any interest in Broadway in the first place.

PseudoFlimCritic, good points you make, but I have to disagree with you on what you said regarding Tony Manero not having any interest in Broadway, he's a dancer, looking to establish a career at dancing, I can see know better why to finally break into the business then landing a role in a major Broadway dance production, to a dancer it would be equivalent to an aspiring actor landing a lead acting role in a Martin Scorsese film.

shareI can only watch Saturday Night Fever once, maybe twice in my life. Staying Alive I watch again and again and again. Whenever it's on, I have to watch it. I have the DVD. It's my guilty pleasure. The movie is so depressingly underrated, and SNF is overrated. That's my opinion.
