Much prefer this to Saturday Night Fever

I had only ever seen Saturday night Fever back in the early 80s when I was a child and never seen Stayin' Alive so I decided to do a double feature of the two.

I have to say, I MUCH prefer Stayin' Alive!

The main reason, and this is just my own personal opinion, is that in SNF there are just next to no relatable characters. Tony and his pals are all complete self-obsessed *beep* and I found it VERY hard to empathise or even really care about them because they are all such bastards. I did enjoy the iconic dance numbers and the retro 70's fashions mind you but as a film I found it hard to watch.

Stayin' Alive is just so much better to watch. Ok Tony is still a bit of a dick but he's much, MUCH more relatable in the film and I found myself wanting to know more about what happened to him.

I also love the 8o'sness of the film too. I mean songs by Frank Stalone and Vince DiCola....how can you not love it? Plus I don't think I've ever seen John Travolta look as good as he does here as he's stupidly ripped and seems to have gone to the Stallone school of dress codes. The dance numbers are fantastic too and I really enjoyed the end sequence.

Speaking Of Stallone I though he did a great job co-witing and directing the film. It DOES have a slight Rocky feel to it but the film was made at the same time Stallone was doing Rocky III and just after Rocky II so t was bound to have similarities and that's a good thing.

Yep, top marks and one I can see myself watching again! :)

I agree with you! Nothing to add cause you said it all. I could watch this movie from start to finish... and then rewind it and watch it again another 1 or 2 times. Never gets old. Never get tired of it. I will never understand the hatred for this movie from what seems to be 85% of viewers. Fools.

I'm impressed by Sylvester Stallone as a director, but honestly I've always liked him overall -- actor, director, writer, whatever.

Let's mention the other talent in this movie besides John Travolta (who looks hotter than ever btw)...

Finola Hughes. Can I just say WOW!!!!! She's phenomenal. Amazing dancer! And such a good actress. She switches from sweet to bitch and back to sweet and then bitch like nothing. I love it! lol The thing about her character is even when she's an absolute bitch, you still love her. Or maybe it's just me. A small part of me kind of feels sorry for her in the end, even though she brought it on herself. She could have had Tony but she plays too many mind games with him. Pushing and pulling him whenever she felt like it. She deserved what she got.

Cynthia Rhodes... she's so freaking talented!!! She acts, dances, sings... the girl can do it all and then some! I was shocked to check out her IMDb page to find she only has like 9 acting credits. That's insane for someone so well known and talented as her. I felt so sorry for Jackie. She is such a great woman and Tony does not deserve her at all. Tony acted like such a complete jerk to her the entire movie. Wants her when he's lonely/bored/needy and completely ignores her when he's with Laura. Even after he begged for Jackie to forgive him and take him back cause he's changed, he kisses Laura on the stage. Why?!?!?! That just tells me he hasn't changed and he will hurt Jackie again. And chances are she'll forgive him again. Jackie should have given that Frank Stallone character a chance. He seemed to really like her and treat her with respect. Unlike Tony.

Not to mention such a great soundtrack (which I've owned since I was a kid). Dancing was great. I really enjoyed the Broadway show at the end "Satan's Alley". I love when Tony threw Laura across the stage and did the solo. That was him breaking free of her once and for all. Just a fun movie and a visual feast in terms of the dancing and overall look and feel of the movie. I can't say enough good things about this movie. And whoever can't see it is missing out big time.

You've got atrocious taste in film buddy. Go read some reviews of SA, if you really want to know why everyone with a brain hated it.

Chas, I am convinced that you are a closet Staying Alive lover. You have countless posts on this board declaring this to be the worst movie ever and also insulting people who enjoy it. So what do you get out of obsessively posting here and being rude about it? It's fine if you don't like the movie but to call others names because they like the movie is the epitome of silly, juvenile behavior and serves no purpose whatsoever.

Despite your many posts, you add nothing to the conversations here. You claim to dislike it yet you never point to any specific reason for your hatred, you merely tell people to go read reviews to see why it's hated by critics. Why post if you're not even truly partaking in the discussion?

"Why couldn't the monkey arrange this from INSIDE the garbage can?"

The only thing STAYIN ALIVE has over SNF is the 2 hot babes.
The 2 women out perform the 2 women leads from SNF and that could explain the repeat viewing.
Tony's dancing in SNF is top notch. All he does in SA is just jump around and spin.
The music in SNF is way better than SA.
