Call me naive
I've seen this film a few times and I still can't figure out what the contraption is that her husband builds 'as a joke' and which plays a part in his suicide. What is it?

It's a bondage device. I believe he made it thinking he could sell them to make money, like the rest of the money schemes you see in the movie, that's what I read somewhere.
sharewhat i can't figure out is exactly what cushner's girlfriend whispers to dorothy when dorothy wants to know what the device is for. probably can't spell it out here, i know it's bad, but dammit, i can't lip-read!
shareIt might have been a joke but the bondage tool that he built expressed his own tendencies and desires to control his girlfriend.
Truth is for suckers, Johnny Boy.
look up Star 80 on Wikipedia or do a google search for a more explicit explanation. It is an unfortunatley graffic part of the official crime.

I've never actually heard an official explanation for it, but I always took it to be a bondage device which leaves a, hmm, certain orafice in a position of easier access.
shareWell, sodomy isn't off limits to the imdb. But, I think the device was used either by homosexuals or rapists, which is why it was so disturbing in the film. Not the homsexual part (but it did open the question up, to me anyway, as to whether Paul was in the closet, or bi-sexual,) but the fact that he used it on her in the end, well, that was sick. It seemed like the final act was WAY more thought out, and Dorthy should have been told much earlier about what was going through the creeps mind by some friends.
shareI remember the scene where Dorothy found out what it was for. They held a party outside of the apartment inviting friends and neighbors. Someone noticed the device that Paul had made. Dorothy asked a female guest what it was for. The woman whispered the answer to Dorothy who wordlessly looked over at Paul.
"Two more swords and I'll be Queen of the Monkey People." Roseanne
I believe it's called a breeding bench or stand, similar to the kind used by dog breeders. Not sure it has to have dark connotations, since it could be simply a a comfortable piece of sex furniture. And the guy seemed to work a lot in the sex industry, so he might have just been trying to sell them
shareI don´t think Paul built the bondage rack just in order to use it with Dorothy (he may not have thought of that, actually) but it would only make one and not 12, right?
Obvious that he built them to make money.
