Was this filmed around the time when Burt Reynolds was fired from Universal Studios, or did he just decide he didn't want to be a part of it, or they didn't rub enough green stuff in his face or what?
Seriously though, why wasn't he in this one. I think he did make a better Bandit than Jerry Reed. His role as the truck driver was more suited for him.
Burt actually was in this film in a cameo role filmed in Black&White. This was near the end of the film. The casting of Jerry Reed as the Bandit was a last-minute thing. Originally, it was Jackie Gleason who was supposed to be both the Sheriff and Bandit. Personally, it looked to me that Jerry Reed was quite uncomfortable in the role that Burt played to perfection.
shareReynolds was in the process of making the Nascar movie Stroker Ace in '83, that's why. He did have a cameo in Smokey 3 at least.

I just finished watching it. The time flew by. I'm serious, I thought it started at 8:00 PM and it's right now 8:49 PM.
I never knew Burt had a cameo. When I saw him at the end, I thought it was Archive Footage.
