I met Gordon Cooper at a convention once.

He was signing autographs at some company's booth. I said to him, "It was a real thrill watching you guys when I was a little kid." He smiled and said, "Yeah, it was kind of thrilling for us, too."

Nice anecdote. The only one I've met in person was Vance Brand at the Air Show Down Under a few years ago. Sadly, I rate Gordo's autobiography one of the worst.
