this is coming in the mail as i type, i've wanted to see it and cant wait for it to arrive. i was wondering why it was banned in some countries. is it gory or excessively violent? i know in the UK films with martial arts weapons come under heavy fire with the censors but are their any other reasons in terms of violence?
I know some of the violence was cut out, I know they had issues with censors when Cho's son got the shuriken stuck in his head, and Braden chopping the guard's hand off in the stairwell. But I didn't realize it was actually banned outright in some countries.
"One of their numbers was butchered, this is a wake."
When "Revenge of the Ninja" came out on VHS in the 80s, some of the violence was cut from what you mentioned above. I remember watching it in the theater and on HBO, and all the violence was in there.
It was strange they cut the movie for video audience (although the DVD release is in tact).
I ment the director, Sam Firstenberg, in the mid-90s and asked him why they cut it for video and he said that some people couldn't stomach all of the violence and that's why it cut. It was a shame. I was 12 at the time, and I thought i was going nuts seeing two different verions of the movie.
You are indeed correct, I remember that. I'm from Canada, and they used to show the uncut version on pay-tv (Superchannel, etc.) in the late 80's and thru the 90's.
Memorable is the extended gushing of blood out of Braden's heart at the end of the climatic rooftop battle.
How about those deleted scenes in the trailer? Too bad they'll probably never see the light of day.
Do you remember that other Firstenberg film "Avenging Force" with Michael Dudikoff a few years later?
"Avenging Force" is still one of my favorite action films from the 80s. Still waiting for a USA DVD release of it (probably be waiting for a long time).
But there were a lot of delted scenes from "Revenge" and from "Ninja 3". Sam Firstenberg told me that some of the stuff that was in the trailer were cut from the released movie to keep the pacing of the action.
