shareI read somewhere that Lucas wanted to make a point of a technologically inferior group being able to take on advanced technology sort of like the US Military and their failure in the Vietnam War.
Wookies were to be used at first, but then changed to Ewoks. Very sad, I wish they had stuck with Wookies, it would have been much more believable then.
Still doesn't explain how 40 Star Destroyers and 1 Super Star Destroyer were unable to wipe out the tiny Rebel Fleet over Endor though.
The Imperial forces were not expecting the Rebel ships to bombard them at point-blank range, just to keep from being blasted by the Death Star.
Indeed, that is certainly true, and Admiral Piett did mention the Emperor's orders of not attacking just preventing them from escaping, the remaining Imperial fleet (probably some 20-30 Imperial-class Star Destroyers) left the system in total confusion after 4 of its major leaders were wiped out almost all at the same time.

- Lord Darth Vader

The Ewoks were more of a distraction to keep the Imperial forces busy whilst the Rebels found a way into the deflector shield control room. I'd say that Han and Leia turned the tide, like when Leia shot dead two Stormtroopers quickly even when wounded and in a sticky spot, and Han for pretending to be an AT-ST driver who lured the Imperials out with a comm message, and the Ewoks and Han were there to make sure that they never got back inside once they got out, paving the way for the deflector shield's destruction.
