Was Mary in love with Norman?

Or was her desire to not continue with the plan to hurt him anymore more out of feeling sorry for him or guilt on her part? I've seen the film several times and still can't form an opinion on it.

I think maybe a little of both.

I don't think she was romantically interested in him, I thought she just felt sorry for him and honestly believed that he'd be okay if her and her mother left him alone, so they formed a sort of odd friendship. I think he was definitely in love with her though. It was probably the first relationship he had with a woman that was non abusive and had potential to not end in violence and terror.

Just because a man and a woman are close and care for each other doesn't mean there's romance involved.

Yes, well put and Norman was very fragile, and while he appeared to be able to take care of himself—he was assertive and professional with Mr. Toomey when confronting him about how he was running the motel—he had someone like Mary who was being "genuinely" compassionate and concerned about him and appreciated her friendship and company. She also knew what was going on and why Norman was getting confused and had a "guilt" complex about it. She loved Norman, just wasn't "in love" with Norman. Nice characterizations in this film and even Dr. Raymond was seen in a decent light and legitimately concerned for Norman's welfare. However, I doubt in reality that someone with Norman's condition would have ever been released.

Ironically, considering the plots of the Psycho films and the age difference between the 2 characters, I think Mary's love for Norman was quite maternal. She seemed to believe that if she supported him and loved him he could recover. I love their relationship and the way both actors played it.
