30th Anniversary

Private School opened in theaters on Friday, July 29, 1983 and Monday will be its 30th anniversary. I remember very well when it opened, I was 15 and in the summer between 9th and 10th grade. We had just gotten our first VCR and joined our first video store the previous fall, and were really into movies at that time, and went to alot in the theaters in the summer of 1983, our first really big movie going summer. I ended up seeing 8, and my mother and sister 7. Unfortunatly, Private School was not one of the ones I saw, but it came close, because in early August of that year the three of us went to the mall in Gastonia, NC, and later that day went to its three screen theater on the top floor. They planned to see Return of the Jedi again for about the tenth time that summer, and Private School was playing there as well. I thought seriously about seeing it, as I had already seen ROTJ over 5 times, but then went with them to see it again. I was familiar with Private School as I had seen a big story about it with alot of pictures in an entertainment magazine just before then. And I saw Leonard Maltin's review of it on Entertainment Tonight when he gave it a 1 (out of 10). But I did rent it out on VHS the following years of the 1980s and saw it several times and really liked. And I taped it when it came on television in 1990 and watched it several times on this tape. And last year I saw a copy of it in the DVD store I went to to buy things on DVD, and I immidiently brought it, and have since watched it several times on my DVD player. And I plan on watching it this Monday for its 30th anniversary.

Hooray for 30 years of a cult classic! I sure wish I could have seen it on the big screen back in the day, but I hadn't even been born yet!
