what did the swamp thing alien have to do with the movie??

At the beginning, what the hell was that swamp thing alien about? Is that what trumpy would turn into if he lived long enough to see old age? I was so confused by that first part of the movie (and the subsequent scenes as well)

Those were clips from the public-domain movie "Galaxy Invader". They may have used it since they didn't have to pay for the footage, and it sort of set the mood for the movie. Although I have to say, Galaxy Invader is a better movie, although that's not saying a whole lot here.
