So they just leave the alien to roam the woods? All the bonding that the kid had for him is just thrown to the curve.
That ending, like the entire film, just sucked. You go through a lackluster film just to get to a horrible and depressing ending.

Well if nothing else it was very surprising, I was sure that fking kid would convince the rest that the alien was a nice ugly thing that could do stupid magic
and that they would all embrace the little longnosed fuxxer, so it was a wtf ending... not that any ending would have helped the movie in any way,

At this point the mother was well aware of the murders caused by the other alien. With these murders being the ONLY context she has of the aliens, it would not be unreasonable for her to assume that Trumpy might do the same. For all she knew they were both part of an invasion squad.
She probably assumed Tommy was just being naive. Kids CAN be misled, and they aren't always aware of the full situation. And Tommy IS kind of retarded socially.
I can't say I really blame her all things considered.
That ending made me want to cry; it's so sad and heart-breaking.

I watched this free on Amazon a few weeks ago, and I couldn't agree more. The movie was just awful, and they could have at least given us a positive ending to make up for it. Even the MST3K jokes couldn't make up for this mess. Though it definitely helped.
shareI re-watched this film for the first time in a very,very long time (I must have been like 6 the first time I saw it) and I did not remember at all how stupid the ending was.
The little boy came out as being crazy or something , in one moment he say "I love, I'll miss you trumpy" then 30 secondes after he say "I hate you , go away!" I blame this on bad acting and directing.
I think what we were suppose to understand was that Trumpy did not want to go so the boy had to act like he hated him so it will make him leave but the way it was done made it look like that child had some serious mental issues lol
And that final shot of trumpy looking at the distance lol The MS3KT could have not ripped it better then they did , it really looked like Trumpy was thinking "Help , I was raised by a child , I cannot take care of myself in the wilderness" lol
