how this could have avoided competing against 'Octopussy'

1. The rights to the film would be sold not to Albert R. Broccoli, prior to 1962,
but to co-writer Kevin McClory, enabling him to film it separately, some time.

2. In 1975, McClory would get this film made, and it would not compete with an official Bond movie,
being released between "The Man With The Golden Gun" (1974) and "The Spy Who Loved Me" (1977).

So, come 1983, "Octopussy" would have no competition from an unofficial Bond movie,
and would preferably have an actor other than Roger Moore play 007.

Then again, Timothy Dalton could have succeeded Moore in "For Your Eyes Only"
and not just made more films, but achieved more acclaim for his portrayal.

In 1983, Dalton would have been too young for the role, especially considering how both Connery and Moore played the role in their mature years.

And it would have been too soon to replace Moore. No matter how much you may dislike him (he was the Bond of my childhood, so I'm pretty fond of him), Moonraker was a huge success, and it would have been a tremendous mistake from the studio to switch him for an unknown.

I remember they discovered a lost script, WARHEAD, that was co-written by Connery and McClory that was apparently intended to be filmed in 1977.

Hardly lost. It had been shopped around quite a bit and the title popped up periodically in Starlog's media columns. It essentially provided the starting point for the script here.

Except that Dalton would not have taken over from Moore. They had already chosen an American for the role before Moore returned at the last minute. Yes, actor James Brolin was already chosen to take over as Bond. It's right there in the DVD supplements. I still don't know what was going through Cubby's mind back then.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I remember that. Don't have the good DVD with features, I saw the test footage James made online.

Don't think Roger filmed a scene like this in the movie. Or it just slipped my mind.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about Brolin. While I like the guy, he was completely miscast as Bond. He looked just like any other american action hero of the time.

reply

Yep, no slight against Brolin at all, but he was simply wrong for the part. Again, what was going through Cubby's mind???

The scene Brolin is acting out in the screen test is taken from From Russia with Love.

Cocaine?

An American James Bond is a big no-no. James Bond is British.

Whether it's an 'official' Bond film or not, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN is far superior to the somnifacient OCTOPUSSY.
