The Battle of the Bonds

I remember in the summer of '83 which was the summer before I went off to college I worked at a local cinema when Octopussy and Never Say Never Again were supposed to be released simultaneously. Unfortunately, that never happened but that summer was still called the Battle of the Bonds. It has often been said that Octopussy won that battle because it grossed $67 million to Never's $55 million. But Octopussy was released in June of that year at the height of the summer blockbuster season when cinemas had matinees playing every day whereas Never was released that October when matinees were shown only on weekends. Had Never also been released during the summer, it would have been a much closer "battle". For that reason, I personally believe that the battle remains unresolved.

Someone should air both films at the same time and see which gets higher ratings.

Had I been alive at the time I would've seen both. Two Bond films in one year. Damn. I think both of them are terrific films. I probably would've said NEVER is superior, but I've grown quite fond of OCTOPUSSY. Can't really decide which anymore.

Trust me, since I worked in a cinema that summer and fall, I saw both films several times! For a Bond fanatic like myself, that was one of the highlights of my summer. I'm with you. I like both films and both Connery and Moore. So IMO, there are definitely no losers.

Now that Eon owns Never Say Never again we can actually call them both official James Bond films!

Thing is I don't even consider one of them better or worse than the either... and I typically find Roger Moore's films pretty lame.
