Worst Bond special effect of all time

The horse jumping off the castle (and no it couldn't have survived the fall)

They were considered quite good in their day. Major article about them in the industry mag Cinefex at the time.

You know I'd completely forgotten making this comment - obviously looking back many of the effects look creaky now as we're all used to pixel perfect CGI.

However the Revenge of the Jedi from the same year had some fantastic flying sequences inside the uncompleted Death Star - a credit to all the model makers and the motion control camera operators.

The CG backgrounds in Die Another Day and the CG Komodo dragons in Skyfall are much, much worse. Ridiculous, in fact.

reply

Die another day CGI was truly awful - not even good for 2002. Regarding Skyfall I personally didn't see any problems with the Komodo dragons although I have now read an article about the filming that points out some of the problems

As I've grown older my ability to perceive what is real and what isn't has diminished. When I was 10 I had my first experience of CGI in the film 2001 - A Space Odyssey- which I later found out had been hand animated because no computer of the 1960s was fast enough to do real time sequences.

Agree about DAD CGI was bad even for 2002.

reply

Perhaps by 2024 all the Bond film will be CGI - we could have the return of Sean Connery.

reply

The whole effect of him zooming to the ceiling was ridiculous but it's fun.

I think the nuclear bomb exploding in China from Diamonds Are Forever is worse.

reply

Yes I saw that just before Christmas - appalling.

reply

I think the Barbie doll shot in TSWLM and some of the CGI shots in DAD are the worst.

reply

DAD has been mentioned - they were trying to do too much with the limited technology of the day. Spaceships - yes - Tsunami - no.

reply

What Barbie doll shot?
