What's with all the rainbows?

I've only been watching this movie for about 30 minutes and I've seen the same rainbow print on Michael's shirt, the shower curtain, and on the neighbor ladies sweatshirt.

What does it mean?

Kitschy 80s fashion...well more like a carry over from the 70s when rainbows were all the rage.

I lived in venice, ca where most of this was shot, and rainbows were were everywhere back then. It was supposed to be a symbol that everyone should be tolerated and included, although it mostly became associated with gays.
