Avatar: Local Hero with Dummies
Only the oil company didn't negotiate in such a friendly way and Mac didn't go back to Houston.
I hope this comment doesn't spoil the beauty of the Local Hero message board!

Hahahaha...good observation!
shareI agree with you that the basic plot points you mentioned have similarities...
...However, my enjoyment from a film comes from much more than just the plot -- it's also about tone and how the movie makes me feel; Local Hero being a case-in-point.
Even considering these plot similarities, I would never say that Avatar and Local Hero are similar. Not that Avatar was a "bad" film (it was 'a little above average'), but it did not make me feel the same way Local Hero makes me feel.
That's how they are different -- The two films do not evoke the same emotions in me. (...and, to tell you the truth, Avatar evoked practically NO emotion in me.)
It's a recurrent theme in movies because it is a recurrent theme throughout history. When we will grow ashamed of our misbehaviour heaven only knows. That's what artists are good for. Getting us to think about ourselves.
