Foot fetish scene there to make it even more obvious that there is something "grumly" about Marina.

For other commenters - of course, Marina disparages the idea that seals are mer-folk. She knows that they are selkies, as is Marina herself. A different creature altogether. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selkie

Yes, we saw some early Tarantino influence in that scene! lol.

I prefer Selkies to mermaids, they are a lot more tragic, and the relationship between Selkies and humans is much more complex - they are not just out to drown us for no reason.

Selkies are mentioned in a nice little conversation in Rob Roy as well, between him and his wife.
