Mark Kermode - The Soundtrack of My Life

Mark Kermode is a BBC film critic. Local Hero is one of his favourite films, so he is clearly a discerning chap! Recently he has had a four part series on BBC Radio 2 on Wednesday evenings called "The Soundtrack of My Life" in which he has talked about film soundtracks.

The whole series has been very interesting but I thought I would refer you to programme 3 (I am fairly sure it's the third one) in which he talks about the Local Hero soundtrack. He also speaks to Bill Forsyth and Mark Knopfler. Don't get me wrong, the whole thing is maybe 5-10 minutes of the show, but the whole thing is interesting anyway but for a Local Hero fan that part is indispensable. For example is mentions in passing that (as has been asked here somewhere) Victor's song is actually not some traditional song, but an original composition by Mark Knopfler!

Anyway, worth checking out if you can get BBC IPlayer radio or similar.

Thank you for the information. Knopfler did a very good job with The Princess Bride too, IMHO.

Thank you so much for pointing this out. You can download the episode 'The Mystery of Composing' at

The local Hero bit starts at 18:30 and lasts 10 minutes.

We've just had a week's holiday and stayed within 1 mile of the beach from the film. The house we stayed in had the same views across the sea to Rhum and Eigg. The weather was rubbish, but nothing can hide the beauty of the area. We played the Local Hero soundtrack to death and hearing it again now takes me straight back.
