The Keep on Bluray
Someone....anyone... do you know or do you know someone who knows Michael Mann? Tell him if he's not going to release a Director's Cut.... to go ahead and release the Theatrical Version. We've waited long enough!

shareA Blu-ray would be terrific. I've read the rumors about what is causing the holdup, but I prefer to remain positive. Come on Paramount and Michael Mann, release The Keep on Blu-ray and DVD with deleted scenes and/or a brand new Director's Cut!
shareFilm directors have very little to do with film's release on home video.
Movies are property of the studios and studios are the ones(ufortunately)who decide when and if a particular title in their library will be out on DVD.
I would love to see this film appearing on blu-ray...
shareI disagree... Big name director's like Michael Mann and Steven Spielberg have alot to do with their films being released on video. Almost total control. The Keep was supposed to be released several years ago on dvd... I was at Best Buy at 10am the day it was to be released... and it never showed up... no explanation. I'm starting to think that Mann will never revisit it.. When I heared that his film Collateral was being made at Paramount I got excited.. Maybe, just maybe, Mann and Paramount had made up and worked everything out... I can imagine that having your film taken away from you can really suck. Maybe after filming Collateral he would spend alittle time and authorize a remastered edition. Well... we are still waiting. I haven't given up hope. I love this film and I know that one day I will see it on Bluray.
shareAnother reason for the hold up could be the soundtrack. As fans of the film know.. a proper Soundtrack release from Virgin never happened. Tangerine Dream's version of "Walking in the Air" by Howard Blake caused all kinds of problems. These 27 year old copyright problems could be the main reason it's never been released on anything but VHS and Laser Disc.
shareI discovered several sites on the Net today that are selling DVD versions of "The Keep". I wonder if these have been released by Paramount or someone else.

I'm thankful that I have the LaserDisc of The Keep, but it really should be released on DVD at least; Blu-Ray would be even better. One of my all-time favorite movies. The combination of Michael Mann's vision and Tangerine Dream's music is amazing. A long, long time ago, when Sony came out with its first Stereo Beta videotape recorder, the salesman at the store showed The Keep (specifically the portion of it where the soldiers are coming down the steps in slow motion with their ponchos flowing out behind them, while the music of Tangerine Dream is playing.) It was enough to convince me to buy the stereo Beta recorder, and also The Keep tape. When The Keep came out on LaserDisc I bought a LaserDisc player, and keep it still just for that movie.
BUT IT'S LONG OVERDUE FOR RELEASE ON DVD OR BLU-RAY!!!
"filmuero"... I know exactly what you mean. I was 18 and stationed in Seoul Korea... I bought my first Stereo VCR along with The Keep at the PX (Post Exchange)..... I remember that movies on VHS were expensive! 6 months later.. I bought my first Pioneer Laser Disc Player along with a full-frame LD Movie of The Keep and Pink Floyd's The Wall.. I thought I was the *beep*

99% of the people that love this movie... love Tangerine Dream's score! Michael Mann used Tangerine Dream to score his very first motion picture "Thief"... the movie and the score was given high marks!
shareCouldn't agree with you more! The TD score for this film is highly overrated considering the body of TD's work in film. I've collected about 5 versions of this film's score and they all--well...they suck. I can't believe how quickly someone wants a copy from me when I tell them I have it. I never listen to it. I recently watched the film on Netflix and was struck by the music during the scene when the smoke monster carries the girl back to her room--that's great stuff.
Release the movie--any version--on Blu Ray. I'm a guaranteed customer!

To remove the Tangerine Dream score from this film would be like pulling out it's heart....the score helps make the film unique.
Besides, when someone has watched a film for decades, they remember the score and to change it would ruin the film, just like what was done with the score of the DVD of Nineteen Eighty-Four, when it was changed from the Eurythmics score that people had been used to for decades...that's why I gave away the DVD and burned my own that I had recorded from Cinemax which had the Eurythmics score on it.
THE KEEP was supposed to be released on dvd on November 13th, 2003. Apparently there were plenty in their warehouses ready to ship, but it was pulled due to Michael Mann himself.
Apparently he is quite embarrassed by the film, as his aesthetics have changed since the mid 1990's (with films like HEAT), with a more realistic approach. Due to his experience making the film, and his mindset towards how he makes films now, Michael Mann will not make any effort to have this film released properly no matter what any group of fans say.
That's because he's too busy tinkering with all his other films and can't leave them alone. Have you seen all the versions of Manhunter? -- the theatrical cut was the best version! Same thing with Last of the Mohicans--the Blu ray version is closer to the theatrical cut. Ali was a good extended cut but unnecessary. Thank God The Insider hasn't been screwed with. When in the hell will he release the theatrical cut of Thief--or even release it in 16x9 or on Blu Ray?
I love the guy's work but I was disturbed by how certain single lines of dialogue were mysteriously missing from the blu ray of HEAT. He should honor his fans and release The Keep in some form or license it to Lionsgate so they can release it.

'Apparently there were plenty in their warehouses ready to ship, but it was pulled due to Michael Mann himself.'A. He doesn't have the power to do such a thing. That's ridiculous. B. He consistently states that whilst being disappointed with the end result, he does not hate the film.I think the music rights issue is the most likely reason. Tangerine Dream were not impressed by discovering that Mann had used non-commissioned album music without permission.
shareMan, I would pop my blu-ray cherry if either The Keep or Thief were being released, couldn't ever find a vhs copy of the Keep and the Thief dvd isn't anamorphic.

It may never come but id love the original directors cut on blu ray or even the butchered version
shareMaybe some company like Shout Factory will come to the rescue here? If Shout Factory can license a cult curio like "Halloween III" from Universal and give it a quality release on Blu-ray (which Universal would never have bothered doing) then I'm sure they can do the same thing with "The Keep" and Paramount.
That's what I keep telling myself, anyway. Gotta keep the faith... :-D
