Ian McKellans accent?
An Englishman in real life and a Romanian man in the film. What is with the inexplicable american accent...?

shareAsk Michael Mann. Ian McKellan says he showed up ready to work with a Romanian accent, but Mann told him to drop it and to channel a Chicago one(?) It should there on a link on the main page, a personal diary by McKellan.
I saw the film because I'm a fan of Mann's work, but it's his only serious misfire, disintegrating in the second half into incomprehension. Part of that is studio interference, part of it is Mann's problem with making up his mind and sticking to it. Why else are ther nearly four cuts of Manhunter? Three different cuts of The Last Of The Mohicans?

I live in England and have 2 Romanian friends and a Polish friend who all speak with "American" accents when speaking English. It's not that unusual
My name is Mike. His name is Bob
Maybe as americans played romanians in this pic, if they all had yank accents it would categorise them as one group, one race. This juxtaposes with the german (prochnow) or german accented (Byrne) nazis.

They seem to do something similar in Enemy at the Gates. The Brits are Russians and even Ron Perlman (American)plays a Russian with a Brit accent.
