Bad

Soundtrack was unbelievably bad. Let there be no argument there, unless it was ironic. As for the film itself, I am perplexed. Any potential of the story itself (if existent) seems to have been swamped by mediocre directing and acting....which is astonishing considering the cast. The only lesson I can learn from this film is that, so often, the success of an actor is down to a director. A great director creates great actors. In this case, poor directing, scriptwriting and soundtrack offered good actors no opportunity to distinguish themselves from inexperienced B-movie extras. Shame it took itself seriously.

I watched this again for the second time and was pleasantly surprised because I thought it was dreadful first time. This time I could see Mann's hallmarks and enjoyed the style and use of the keep. I liked the soundtrack, but then again the soundtrack to Manhunter is one of my all-time favourites ...

The acting was mostly poor, I agree. I think the story and script as much as the directing let it down; it's a pity that we had to see the creature in the keep because the atmosphere prior to its appearance was good. I liked Scott Glenn and he reminded me of the actor who played Dust Devil. Indeed until we realised his role I thought he might be a kind of Dust Devil. I also thought Prochnow as Nazi captain was good. I didn't recognise Gabriel Byrne at first and he reminded me of Ralph Fiennes from Schindler's List.
