I was 100% down with this movie UNTIL... (spoilers)

Watching this for the first time on Netflix instant, i know only that it's WWII, Michael Mann, and "supernatural".

I am SOOOO down with this flick, it's eerie, it's got a little John Carpenter vibe, but with better characters than usual (Jurgen Prochnow!!).

When the smoke monster showed up and made the rapists' heads explode, I was super excited. When he took shape and carried her back to her room, i started to worry. Then he spoke, and I worried some more. Then he reached his hand out and touched Ian McK, like ET, and i'm out.

I'll finish the movie, because I love Scott Glenn, and he's barely done anything yet, but dang. I was hoping this flick would keep it a little more vague about the "evil force" and just play with shadows and echos.

I mean, i guess it's better to actually have a monster, but if the effects are so crappy (really, any effect wouldn't look "real" in this scenario) - i guess i'm a bigger fan of "if the shark looks fake, hide it under some barrels."

Much of what you describe is directly out of the book. I was half and half about this flick and then read the book. They pretty much keep to the novel with some strange exceptions and a lot of missing storyline. The music is a bit off-putting -- specially at the end. But true, Glenn is worth the time alone.

I like Scott Glenn but honestly, while his acting is spot on, the role itself really lets him down and now, after multiple viewings, I actually kind of dread his character's arrival, as it takes focus off of Prochnow's Woermann, arguably tied with McKellan's Cuza as the most dynamic character in the film.

I love to love my Lisa.

This is my main criticism of it too and had Mann played with the monster in the shadows more then it would made for a better film and added atmosphere.

Wrong. The monster's the best thing in it.
