Was Calvin qualified to run Sea World?

He makes one mistake after another, causing the deaths of several people including his beloved nephew. How did he ever rise to the top of a reputable adventure park chain? Hate to bring race into it, but it makes you wonder if affirmative action might have been in play.

Is this your student... The champion?

I don't think Calvin had risen up the chain, I think he was supposed to be a retired sports star or some kind of entrepreneur. Some of the dialogue hints at that I think. I get the impression he had just bought the park, thrown a load of money at it and now expected to be able to sit back and enjoy the profits without really thinking of the possible consequences. More money than sense basically.

Towards the beginning of the movie when hes getting ready to talk to the press about sea world, you hear one of the SW employees tell the press "Please leave out any questions about Mr. Bouchards colorful past." Or something along those lines, and it was implied he was some kind of entrepreneur.

"Please leave out any questions about Mr. Bouchards colorful past."

Good catch. That helps - a little bit - toward understanding why this character is such a self-absorbed semi-incompetent.

reply

He was money-minded, which CEOs care a lot about; but his problem was that he doesn't listen to anybody else who gives good advise. He cares only about the financial bottom line, while the other workers worry about staff and park safety, and animal care.

He was probably qualified to run the business side of things, but defiantly not qualified to be in charge of the Sea Life. Not sure if its affirmative action, or if he was hired to do what he was qualified for, but overstepped his bounds on the Sea Life part.

The question remains.
