It's NOT THAT bad!

Honestly, when I was a kid, this was my favorite of the Jaws films. Same goes for many of my friends growing up. Of course, you get older and begin to appreciate the quality of the original one. Not counting the first movie, this one had the best plot. It was different; it was exciting and suspensful in some areas; the premise was good; some of the actors were good; the setting was great; and there were not one but 2 sharks (throw in the twist to the audience that there's an even bigger shark on the loose); and it has that disaster movie feel with chaos ensuing INSIDE THE PARK (a precursor tho the "Jurassic Park/World" films). And this is coming from years of watching it on TV, in 2D, on network television in the early 90's.

I don't think the setting is great, it would have been better if they kept the setting at Amity or another beach town. As for 2 sharks, there are two sharks in the original with a tiger shark and the great white.

I disagree. Having an animal like that endanger and entraping both tourist and employees at an aquatic theme park raises the stakes. It's a precursor to movies like "Jurassic Park," has that disaster film feel, and is reminiscent of "Revenge of the Creature from the Black Lagoon." I don't think it owuld resonate with an audience as much if they had it at Amity for a 3rd time (maybe if a new sequel were made today, like an anniversary film, they could return to Amity, and that'd be great). But having 3 movies back to back in the same location would feel redundant. As for the 2 sharks in the original, the Tiger shark was already dead and didn't pose a threat to the main characters, that doesn't really count.

I liked the setting and the general story too and even the begining... but as further it went as worse it got. The entire ending was completely stupid.
To me it started as a 7 and ended as a 3. Id give it a 4.5 in total.

I enjoy it more than part 2. You're right about the disaster movie feel. I liked that and I loved the setting. It was a lot of fun. The effects were awful and it got bad toward the end, but overall I had a good time watching this.

Very good. But brick not hit back!

reply

Yes, better than the second if memory serves.

It wasn't nearly as bad as people say. With all the negative reviews I was expecting the absolute worst movie in the world but it was actually quite entertaining. Though, as other people stated, the first part of the movie was a lot better than the end. It sort of had a Piranha (1978) feel about it. It reminded me of that film mixed with Jurassic World.

I certainly don't hate it, don't love it either. I thought a couple of scenes were good such as Overman's death and the shark wreaking havoc on the water park. Definitely liked it better than revenge, I'd give it a 5/10.

It's a good popcorn movie.

It's really the poor special effects that are the biggest letdown.

reply

Agreed, I just watched it again on AMC and its really not bad at all.

It's pretty mediocre, but once you view it through the lens of an '80s slasher film, it functions much better.

I like it well enough, even if I can recognize that it is an objectively terrible movie.
