Can the picture qualty ever be improved?

One reason I was really looking forward to the Blu-Ray was that I was hoping the picture quality would be improved (the DVD looked extremely grainy and dark). To my disappointment, the BR barely improves on the DVD as the images still looks pretty bad. Can this ever be improved? According to Wikipedia, this is because only the left-eye image (which only took up half of the 35 mm film frame) was used for the VHS, television and DVD releases of the film. Does that mean the film can never be improved to look as good as other films shot in 35 mm?

It definitely could be, but Universal would never put money into such a restoration. Our best hope at this point is that Shout gets to release their version of it. Be sure to tweet them and write them on Facebook requesting they release this movie. The more people that ask, the more they'll be interested to try.

Yeah pretty much. Though even with a strong petition, I seriously doubt Universal would fork over the money to improve the picture.

I disagree that this is a budget issue.... As WikiPedia says.... half the frame is used for one eye, and the other half, for the other eye, hence, this is essentially a 16mm film.

There aren't technical processes that can create resolution that isn't there. You can upconvert, yada, yada... but the original image is dirty and muddy and grainy. You'd only be upconverting those same flaws. A blue ray version probably looks quite close to the theatrical presentation (minus the 3d).

Higher than 16mm but yes lower than 35mm (16mm is roughly 1/4 of the frame rather than 1/2). The 3d version (on the same Blu-ray disc) actually looks a little better than the 2d version.
