Spoilers perhaps: What are your thoughts about Cochran?

For instance, did you think of his as just a man who was heavily into black magic or, something more sinister, such as a demon entity taking the form of a man who maybe takes on different identities every so often? Also, what are your thoughts about it being "time again' and the "planets' determining the events of the big sacrifice? In the film, did the planets determine periods of attrocities and mass deaths such as wars, etc, and gGiven the attrocities of the 20th century, was that (and the position of the planets in 1982) a cue and clue for Cochrane to plan the mass sacrifice which only happens every millienum or so?

Seems to me that Cochran is an occult practitioner and that there is no evidence to suggest that he is anything else. He managed to accumulate enough wealth to get any obscure texts he needed as well as outrageous things like procuring a stone from Stonehenge, but it all seems human level (In a James Bond villain sorta way).

I've run a good many tabletop RPGs based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft and so I have put a bit of thought into the practicalities of ritual magic in a real world context. One of the areas that I cannot make sense of is the use of astrological data for the timing of events. It is an unfortunate fact that dates such as Beltane and Samhain connect with no actual position of the heavenly bodies that are supposed to have some effect on occult matters. I hand waved the problem to some extent using the dates as approximate periods of traditional significance while having my occultists draw detailed information from the ephemeris.

Interesting. So perhaps maybe thet planets aligning was just a clue or sign because people back three thousand years ago planned the mass sacrifices on the alignment. I just wonder if he was hoping to get away with all the murders he caused afterwards. He certainly would have triggered deaths world-wide. But then again, would there be enough people left alive to bring him to justice.
