Great Movie... still makes me laugh when Riki Fulton (RIP) walks on and gives his "Greetings Comrads" speech :-) guy trying to make it as a serious actor, yet brought so much joy to Scotland each New Years eve with his comedy sketch show... saddly missed

I'm with you. Great book and a great movie!

If your only excuse for not liking the movie were the things that were dropped, try focusing on the things that were kept. The wife sub-plot in the book was interesting, but unnecessary to the main story. The movie stands up well on its own. The book has more sub-plots, but the stories are essentially the same. Watch the movie as a summary of the book, read the book to get the extras. Do you have this problem with every book-to-movie (ie. The Hunt for Red October, Snow Falling on Cedars, Presumed Innocent), where something is omitted and causes you to hate it? There are time constraints, you know. I'm not against omission, as long as they don't make major changes to the plot.

I'll ask you agian, do you complain like this everytime something from the book doesn't make it into the movie? All of the things you mentioned are extras, and don't directly affect the plot. I'm glad you enjoyed them in the book, but there was no way to put them into the movie. The movie is a faithful adaptation of what Martin Cruz Smith wrote, not complete, but faithful. As a suggestion, you should avoid seeing any movie that has ever been made from a book, because, not only do they sometimes change the story (which I view as a greater crime), but SOME THINGS WILL BE LEFT OUT.

You think the storyline of Gorky Park is "very basic --- murder mystery"? That's a bit of an understatement, don't you think? It is quite a complex operation/investigation, more than most movies even bother with.

I understand what you mean about Arkady being cynical and alienated in Russia, and not fitting in in New York, but that probably had to be cut for time constraints (as well as the change in location).

OK, I'll bite, why do you feel that "made out of money" does not equal "a rich man"?

I'm also curious which books-to-movies you do like.

What I was getting at was that Ebert had read the book and seen the movie, and was still satisfied... and he's a pretty tough customer to satisfy.

I actually liked Hurt's acting and thought he did a good job as Arkady, and that's before I read Ebert's review (I think there's a post of mine here saying so). Arkady isn't a complex character at all. He's cynical and observant, but I wouldn't say complex.

And, yes... I do trust Ebert when it comes to dramas and thrillers. He's a pretty smart man who knows what to look for. I don't always agree with him on comedies, romances, or the more artsy ones.

"He´s cynical and observant, but I wouldn´t say complex".

And he´s also somewhat bland and low-key, as one would reasonably expect of a man of his profession and standing. Some people seem to have a problem with that. I thought Hurt did fine, overall, even if some of the dialogue was somewhat corny - but that didn´t apply to his character alone.
