Soundtrack

Hey, just watched this movie this morning and was highly impressed with it, enough perhaps for me to seek out the novel. Did anyone else feel that the soundtrack was very 48 Hrs (another neat cop movie)? It definately had a feel that evoked that movie...

Anyone?

It's amazing you say that, because I hold the completely opposite opinion. I think the soundtrack really dragged the movie down, except for the final moments. If the entire score was classical and/or traditionally Russian themed music, I think it could've made a huge difference.

Totally agree. Didn't fit with the mood/theme/Russia. I never saw this when it came out, but watching in 2021 I found it clashed with the movie from the opening credits/scenes.

I think the soundtrack is one of the more greatest things of this film.
I love this James Horner soundtrack.

reply

Haha, I loved the soundtrack. They mixed like a russian feel with 80's. Funky! I love those sorts of soundtracks, the soundtrack actually reminded me a lot of the one in Scarface, without the Scarface disco stuff.

Reminded me of the Commando soundtrack. Nice to confirm it was the same guy :)

Yep, I to thought this is commando, I was waiting for the bad Aussie chap with the chain mail tee-shirt to kill some KGB, it never happened :-(

Both "48HRS" and "Commando" have a similar 80s jangy/pounding score that is present in this movie. I believe "Red Heat" also had a similar score. Hey, they were all done by James Horner so it shouldn't be surprising. Plus, most 80s action films sounded pretty much the same. However, I do agree with a previous poster that this film had a variety of sounds which fit each scene rather nicely and provided the proper mood. There was a cold Russian mystery type of theme, a romantic theme, and some action themes. I love how the "48HRS/Commando" theme starts playing when the focus is on the Americans (Marvin and Dennehy). Very appropriate as it is a very Western sound. However, when the focus is on the Russians the theme is more Russian, more classical, more cold/eerie/suspenseful.

Connery, Moore, and Brosnan! Accept NO substitutes!

I agree with you completely. As I watched Gorky Park for the first time all I could think about was the music from Commando and Aliens.

did georgio moroder do some uncredited music cues for this? It sounds like 48hrs mixed with scarface to me.

It was like a weird transition from late 70's early 80's Tangerine Dream, Georgio Moroder type music to classic 80's action music. Almost like the time it was made. I found it kind of weird every time Eddie Murphy would pop up and go on about his money.

Didn't care for it in this movie. But it did give me another excuse to air drum the cues in 80's fashion which amuses my wife. watch any bad 80's action TV and you can't help miming all the random electronic drum fills, usually while someone's "goin' 'round back" or "getting in position" or arriving at a "sinister meeting" LOL!

those drum fills rule!

I liked it also. A nice blend of percussive drums and orchestral instruments with the trademark Horner sound. The different speeds of similar tracks made it interesting but sometimes it got a bit loud and messy in the melody, sort of like a climax.

Great, great soundtrack, especially interpolation of Swan Lake. Such an underrated film!

Parts of the score work but others are jarring and noisy. But yes, it did remind me of 48 Hours and that type/era.

I like the soundtrack on this film. It's very much of it's time and perhaps it has a similarity to other films of that era - can't remember to be honest, but it did remind me of tubular bells.
