To those people looking for the DVD

It's available on region 2 - go search some of the UK dvd shops. Of course this isn't much help if your DVD-player is region 1 only.

There will be a special edition DVD of FIRE & ICE scheduled for release on October 26, 2004. If it's like most other discs from Blue Underground, it will be the definitive release of this classic animated fantasy film.
Check out their webpage: www.blue-underground.com

It doesn't say it on BU's website, but I read that the release has been pushed back to 2005.

while any release by blue underground is well worth waiting for you can purchase a widescreen 5.1 dolby region 0 (or 1) dvd on ebay i just did @ buy it now for 14.95 usually less than the vhs tape i dislike ralph bakshi because he ripped off my friend vaughn bode years ago with wizards but i knew frank frazetta and this is pretty much the only thing you'll ever get from him in video form but the ifc special about him

So yeah October 26th it looks like. Unless they release the film just as itself. But the documentary sounds cool.

All the video stores I've been to say it hasn't been released yet. Any chance somebody from Blue Underground could post a release date? Pleeeeeeezzzz?

This comes from animated-news.com.

12/20/2004 Archives: "Bakshi's Fire And Ice DVD in July"

Long featured on the "future releases" page of its website, Blue Underground honcho Bill Lustig announced on Saturday at a Q&A session for another film screening in Scranton, PA, that Ralph Bakshi's Fire And Ice "should be out around the end of July" from the independent DVD distributors. Apparently, the key thing holding up release has been removing all the dirt from the negative (inherent in the original cels). He also mentioned that the transfer will be Hi-Def mastered, and contain a 6.1 DTS sound mix.

It's good to finally see a timeframe for the dvd release. Here's the original story http://www.animated-news.com/archives/00002844.html

It should also be noted that Blue Underground will release a limited edition 2-disc of Fire & Ice which will include the Frazetta documentary recently aired on Sundance.

Currenly there are a number of formats available in DVD. Region 1 and 2 among others. The DVD industry is almost entirely regulated by the Hollywood movie conglomerates. Sony, which first released the VCR was also prosecuted by Hollywood, however being a corporate giant, it withstood. Today the manufacturers of DVD recorders are small companies that are easily sued into bankruptcy. If you can tell how to distinguish what type of DVD player you own sans a printed manual, please post.

If I understand you correctly - you seek a way of verifying whether your dvd-player is region-locked or not?
Most dvd-players are - except for a few asian models. If you bought it at a conventional store in USA it is very likely it's locked on region 1.

Try searching for the player here: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

A limited edition Region 1 double DVD set hits stores on August 30. The second DVD will contain the feature-length documentary, PAINTING WITH FIRE (a look at the legendary career of artist Frank Frazetta).

I got my copy of Fire and Ice while I was over in Australia. The quality isn't bad - anamorphic widescreen, though the sound is stereo only. No extras to speak, but at the end of the day I'm not that bothered. In my opinion it isn't a very good film (no where near as good as Lord of the Rings) and seeing scantily clad women run about in He-Man/Thundercats type shannigans can be a bit jarring after a while. No way near as sophisticated as anime, and a little lame in places. Still, you can only say that if you've seen it...
