If John McCain and Sarah Palin win the presidential 2008, The Day Aftermovie will be not a fiction, but reality! A new cold war will happen between US and Russia. Iran and Georgia will be the cause of the next holocaust. Yes it will be a nuclear holocaust like in The Day After or threads. Americans with republicans and canadians with conservators plays with a big danger. The Republicans, John McCain and Sarah Palin are very dangerous for the planet. The end is coming if they come to the White House this november.
Try again, and use a history book this time. The only moron would be one who still say Reagan was going to destroy the world in a nuclear fireball when his record and legacy clearly indicate the opposite.
Pan Am 103 Bomber released and sent home to Libya. Obama warns Quadaffi, "Better not celibrate this terrorist's return" Quaddafi hold a massive celibration.
We need another REAGAN in the White House. Not another Carter.
Obama is a fraking joke to every anti-American dictator out there he is an apologist, an appeaser. he will not fight for America and will NOT defend America. Obama sees America as the great evil and that is bullcrap.
Two Quotes to Ponder:
"Life's tough......it's even tougher if you're stupid." -- John Wayne
"My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it." -- Barack Obama
Unfortunately now we are beginning to understand what the second one means and what the first says about us
I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
Quadaffi is not dead due to Obama's policies but by the uprising of his own people. The POINT I was making in my post (which was long before either of the two you mentioned were dead) Was that Obama is turning this country into one that is NOT being taken seriously by the people who ARE a danger to world peace. Because he is an apologist.
Bin Ladin is also not dead because of Obama' policies. All Obama did was approve the order to get him. Something he couldn't really not have approved and still get elected. Obama's taking credit for Military actions is just one of the many things he is doing that's pissing off the military.

What would we do if we didn't have you to educate us? Think of all those you've converted from limp-wristed Liberalism to mouth-foaming Conservatism through the force of your thoughtful, well-formulated, respectful, and non-hysterical arguments.

Yawn. They said the same thing about Reagan back then, too—who's laughing now?
There's a far greater chance of "The Day After" becoming a reality with the disgrace that is Obamateur in the White House than if McCain/Palin had won. His weakness, naivety, and support for appeasement are exponentially more likely to embolden enemies and invite the kind of belligerence that would spark a nuclear war. "Peace through strength," the truest maxim in international relations, is a concept that eludes Obamateur's very meager mind.
We in Australia would fair as badly as the US in a real life "The Day After" scenario. We have at least three naval bases in Sydney: Garden Island, Waterhen and Penguin, and US installations at Pine Gap, Noarlunga and North West Cape. Conversely, if we were spared a direct nuclear hit, we would die of radiation sickness brought by prevailing winds

You folks Down Under would be affected by a US-Russian nuclear exchange as depicted in this film, but you would not 'die of radiation sickness brought by prevailing winds' as the radioactivity is carried by fallout and the air itself does not become radioactive. This is a myth that I think was brought about largely by the Nevil Shute story, On the Beach. Actually, the effects of fallout are geographically limited. While it is theoretically possible that that the after-effects of a cobalt weapon will be longer-lasting, there has just been one cobalt weapon that was even tested, and that test reportedly failed. Besides, what would be the military purpose for making such a weapon? Deterrence? If this was the case, then why not announce to the world that you have it? Without cobalt, the radioactivity in fallout dies down to a safe level within a matter of weeks. Of course, small traces of it will remain for longer periods. And even if cobalt is used, the fallout would be too widely dispersed to have much effect.
Now OTB was an excellent story, but its' description of an ever-expanding area of radioactivity (a 'cloud', if you will) is not scientifically sound. Australia would certainly be affected by such a war, but the primary effects where you are would be economic. Australia would not killed off by radioactivity.

Another thing people fail to understand and makes for overblown fearmongering claims is the idea that radiation will poison the area, making in uninhabitable for hundreds if not thousands of years.
Guess they've never been to modern day Hiroshima and Nagaski.
This fear is fueled by talk of certain radioactive fission products (what makes up fallout) having half lives on the order of hundreds and thousands of years. What they fail to grasp is that Radioactivity is the radioactive decay of one unstable isotope into lesser and lesser forms and elements until it reaches a stable (non-radioactive) isotope. The faster it decays, the more highly radioactive it is. The faster it decays, the shorter it half-life.
Thus the very dangerous radioactive products have Half-Lives on the order of hours, days, and weeks.
The extremely long lived products with half-lives on the order of centuries... are not very radioactive at all and are comparable to many everyday radiation sources we are exposed to on a daily basis. This is why Hiroshima and Nagasaki are NOT radioactive wastelands.

Quite so, good sir.
As you so correctly point out, the longer the half-life, the less intense the radioactivity is per unit time. The quicker a substance decays, the shorter the half-life, but the radioactivity is more.
Another thing that I find is that people will very often spread false information, not out of malice necessarily, but in an effort at self-aggrandizing, to make themselves seem more knowledgeable than they are. One guy, on an internet gun forum claimed to be some sort of military operator, and tried very hard to leave the impression that he was a member of some elite military force of some sort. He was always bragging about how tough he was, etc. I tended to doubt him (and still do) on this, as the true professionals don't crow about their many exploits. Anyway, this guy said that the military told him that 'If you see the cloud, you're dead.' He meant, as I recall, from radiation sickness. Bull. If you are far enough away from ground zero you survive, especially if the winds are in your favor. You can get to shelter, and increase your chances of survival. Also the passing of time favors the person as well. Time, Distance and Shielding was what I was taught would protect you.
One film, This Is Not a Test, a movie made in 1962, promoted the idea of a 200-mile blast radius. Neither the Americans or the Soviets had a weapon of that power. Yet people are convinced that this claptrap is reality.
One thing that most Americans are not aware of is that while the Soviets were promoting the idea in the West (and very successfully too, it seems) that civil defense was useless, they had a very active CD program of their own. Does that tell anybody anything? The idea was that everything would be poisoned from radioactivity, an ever-increasing area of destruction, where we could not eat the food, drink the water or breathe the air. Remember that line from Fail-Safe?
In short, the Soviets seem to have won the propaganda war in this regard.

One of the biggest problem in discussing nuclear weapons is that the typical person tends to OVER EXAGGERATE their power and size. The guy who thinks if you're close enough to see the mushroom cloud, then you're dead... Wonder how he explains away all the thousands who over the years have watched the explosions. Right out in the open.
I think you'll get a big kick out of a thread over on the board for "Special Bulletin"
It starts out as a general discussion with me making a few corrections on some others... Then this idiot, Kolchakthenightstalker pops in and tries to gainsay me when I referred to people 5 miles from a nuke being survivable... He pops in with a comment about people 6 SQUARE MILES away would be vaporized... The idiot could keep straight in his head, the difference between 5 linear miles away (radius) and 5 square miles (area, which is a most decidedly smaller radius)
He goes on, continuously making bigger and bigger mistakes, even completely rewriting a post after I responded so I had to respond a second time to what he changed it to.
I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
I just responded in that thread. Hey; got a question. Does the DVD of Special Bulletin have English or English SDH subtitles? Do you have that DVD and if you do, could you please check? I have a hearing impairment and I have to have them. CC won't do because I have one of those newer DVD players that doesn't display them.

Fast forward to 2013, Putin is not scared of Obama, has zero respect for him. Nuclear missiles are being sent to the Baltic region. Around the world, nobody is scared of this liberal pansy. Cmap, it's almost as if you had psychic powers lol.

My, the irony of this thread. The US is in greater danger of a attack like in this movie because of a weak inept leader like Obama and another cold war almost looks inevitable with Russia making moves and the US/NATO doing nothing. Putin is not the least bit afraid of the US with Obama as President and has made bold moves, wonder if he would be making these moves with a strong leader like McCain who would likely take serious steps against Putin for his actions. Iraq has been re invaded by a stronger terrorist army from Syria which is Obama's fault for ignoring the threat in Syria, pulling all troops out of Iraq despite all the generals/intel telling Obama this was likely to happen. Americans and Briton's are being kidnapped everywhere in the Middle east, several beheaded in Syria, Obama looks like a fool by promising a red line in Syria and then doing nothing especially when he gets no help from NATO countries and Putin saves his tail, Obama is trying to get a coalition against Syria/ISIS but nobody really wants to help so he is relegated to try to train some pharmacists and doctors to fight ISIS which weeks ago said was laughable. Benghazi, Egypt, etc. Funny how Bush was easily able to get a coalition of over 30 countries to help in Iraq/Afghanistan when noble peace prize winner Obama can't even get 10 and even those 10 don't want to do much of anything. To top it off Obama has cut the military and plan more heavy cuts in the future. Obama's foreign policy is a complete abject failure, it really could not be any worse yet the over emotional OP wrongly tried to say McCain/Palin would be bad.
Obama's weak inept lack of leadership on foreign matters/threats is what puts the US in most danger of being attacked like what is depicted in the movie.
Totally agree with you! This is a frightening world right now...unfortunately the uniformed voters don't really care. They are blissfully happy pretending that Obama is the best president ever. Most of the people that I know who voted for Obama barely know what's going on in the world. Or they get all their information from MSNBC or CNN. It's very scary.
It's very interesting to look at a comment like this over seven years later. Because of the weak leadership of the current apologist administration, entities that do not have America's best interests in mind have become emboldened to threaten us at every turn. This administration has weakened the United States' standing in the world by failing to lead, instituting misguided policies, and embarking on dangerous military budget cuts, all the while driving up the national debt to unfathomable levels by spending on unnecessary programs. Just because someone is the President, it does not make them an expert, and smarmy responses, as well as promises you cannot deliver on do not help the situation. Here are two examples: 1. February 23, 2009. President Obama states: "Today I'm pledging to cut the deficit we inherited by half by the end of my first term in office. Now, this will not be easy. It will require us to make difficult decisions and face challenges we've long neglected. But I refuse to leave our children with a debt that they cannot repay. I will be held accountable. If I don't have this done in three years, then there's going to be a one-term proposition." When President Obama took office, the national debt was 10.6 trillion dollars. Given his pledge, that number should have been down to 5.3 trillion dollars by the last day of his first term in January of 2013. Well, it wasn't - it had increased to 16.4 trillion dollars. He then went on to his second term, and as of today the national debt is over 18.6 trillion dollars, and he wants to raise the debt ceiling even further. 2. October 22, 2012. Third Presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney. While discussing United States relations with Russia, Romney commented: "Russia is a geopolitical foe, and Iran is the greatest national security threat we face. Russia does continue to battle us in the U.N. time and time again." Instead of constructively engaging Romney on the issue, President Obama smugly retorted: "Mitt, The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back because the Cold War’s been over for 20 years!", to the laughter of the amused audience. Who's laughing now? Because of President Obama's disrespect and disregard for Russia (and Putin) over the course of his Presidency, we now find ourselves at odds with them on many issues, when in fact we should be cooperating with them to defeat a common enemy that wants to destroy both of our societies.

That is because Obama is a part of that "common enemy" He has sided with Muslim extremists at every turn, from arming the Muslim Brotherhood... Misdirecting weapons to "moderates" straight into Jihadi and Al Qaeda hands... to turning over 5 senior leaders in exchange for 1 POS deserter.... And the list goes on and on. Domestically making speeches and statements derogatory of our Christian foundings to statements in full support of Islam.
