I have to admit that I was always slightly amused when hearing John Lithgow use the pronunciation "Missoura," which is how my grandmother pronounced the name of her home state of Missouri.

Joe Huxley: There's no "nowhere" anymore. You're sitting next to the Whiteman Air Force Base right now. That's about... 150 Minuteman missile silos spread halfway down the State of Missoura. That's... an awful lot of bullseyes.

Though a proud Texan now, I was born and raised in "Missourah" and that is exactly how we tend to pronounce it.

When being sarcastic though. Those of us who Escaped a dead end life growing up in dead end town in "Missourah"...

... Like to pronounce it as "Misery"

Growing up in St. Louis,MissourEE, I always thought people were trying to be funny by pronouncing it MissourA. Then I got stationed at Whiteman AFB and lo and behold, those "hillbillies" actually pronounced it like that!

My grandmother was born around Springfield, and she told me that's how they pronounce it.

I've also heard (as CGSailor mentioned) some people jokingly refer to it as "Misery," although I've traveled through there a few times. Didn't seem so bad from the highway.

I thought Arkansas was worse, actually.

I pronounce it "misery".
