Ok, I just watched this on You Tube to see if it was a movie I remember from my youth (it is not, on to Stagefright). And I have a really stupid question. Was this comedian chick always in a mental asylum or after she killed everyone? LOL. I need help.
Well that's actually a very good question. I have two theories on the topic. Most people would probably deduct that the "Patti" character went nuts under the pressure of the auditioning process and "eliminated" all of her competition and then was committed to an asylum. My personal thought is that she was there all along and what takes place throughout the movie is all in her head.
I think she was committed AFTER everything that happened and was telling the story. I don't think it was all in her head and that it was 'made up' so to speak. I hate things like that. Which reminds me of April Fools Day. I wish it hadn't all been a joke at the end. Not very effective.
She is a comedian in front of an audience, she goes away to the audition and then after she kills everyone she is put in an asylum where she does stand up in front of her fellow inmates.
The ideas are pretty good here from everyone so far.
But I agree that it was just a bookending situation. You see her character doing stand up comedy to an audience when we first meet her. Then the last time we see her she's doing stand up to an ASYLUM audience.
Basically her story has come "full circle".
It's a good thought that she was crazy all along and the movie was all in her demented mind. I just think the "it was all a dream" scenario would be a let down after the fun Horror ride of the movie.
The way I understood it, Patti might have been insane since the beginning. But she was committed only after the murders. Hence, she ends up performing stand-up acts to a bored asylum audience.
Note that she also says - "I always wantED to be an actress" at the end. She couldn't because the director was killed by Ms Sherwood who in turn was killed by Patti herself. Anyway, the events in the movie describe why Patti is in the asylum. That wouldn't be explained if it was all in her mind.
Anyway, it's an interesting thought and there is no real proof against the concept that it was all in her head. Just that I don't think that was the case here.
Haha, this movie is something new everytime you watch it. Here's my ending.
Maybe Patti is in the institution the whole time, and dropped out of the audition after being sent to the asylum, and the casting session is held normally, and somebody gets the role, and the film's murders and all that jazz is just Patti's thoughts of revenge.
I hate to burst everybody's bubble but the ending is just the real version of Patti's first introduction in the film. Logic dictates this. Remember, as she's doing stand up she hints at the violence she is planning on doing - showing us how crazy and scary she is. Also if you look at the audience members in the stand up scene you will see many similarities between them and the patients at the end. Ex: One guy has a arm cast extending around his upper body; at the end there is a guy who resembles him with a straight jacket on.
Anyway, a pretty scary movie. That old lady mask always gave me the creeps.
