shareWilliam Ostrander (Buddy) was only 23/24 when Christine was filmed/released, but I agree that he could have passed for being in his mid-30s. He's only about a year and a half older than Keith Gordon (Arnie) and John Stockwell (Dennis).
At my high school there was a "vocational center", AKA: "voc center", located in its own building, which taught trades such as auto mechanics, forestry, truck driving, carpentry, etc. It wasn't uncommon for "voc boys" to be 19 or 20, or even 21 in at least one case, i.e. Don Chenevert. Buddy Repperton has always reminded me of Don Chenevert, who was in high school in the early/mid-1980s, took auto mechanics classes at the voc center, had the same hairstyle and sideburns, wore the same type of clothes, and was old enough to buy alcohol for his classmates.

shareNo, he should have had a late '60s Nova or an early '70s Duster, in well-used condition. Those sold for cheap, especially the 6-cylinder versions, and were popular among "voc boys" like Buddy in the late '70s to mid '80s. They all had "plans" to swap in a bigger engine, usually a 350 into a Nova or a 340 or 360 into a Duster, though few of them ever followed through with it, because that stuff costs money. The ones who did change the engine usually did it with a tired 200,000+ mile junkyard engine with worn-out crank bearings, leaky rear main seal, low oil pressure, and a noisy valvetrain. Then they might spend $13.99 at Pep Boys for a "chrome dress-up kit" for their "new" engine, and mount some bald mud tires from the dump on the back, you know, "slicks".
People like Buddy didn't have pristine cars, and they especially didn't have pristine desirable cars like first-generation Camaros or second-generation Chevelles, because they were expensive, and voc boys never had deep pockets.
