is this exactly the same as strange days?
and if not, how does it differ?

**SPOILERS**
The concept itself is exactly the same as Strange Days, in that one could view the recorded experiences of another person. However, I thought the story in Brainstorm was much better and more cohesive (in my mind, the story in Strange Days totally fell apart). Brainstorm is about the scientists developing the technology, and how the technology can be used for good and evil. However, Brainstorm is nowhere near as dark as Strange Days, and has a lot of lighthearded and humorous moments (i.e. - a middle-aged scientist having a mild heart attack after playing back a love-making memory tape). I personally think the movie is underated. I liked it a lot.
If you like this movie, you'll probably like Dreamscape too.

I haven't seen Brainstorm yet--I vaguely remember it when it was originally released, I was 13 at the time. But I was just reading the summary of the plot now, and that was what I was thinking--it sounds a lot like "Strange Days", which is one of my favorite science fiction movies, used the same plot device.
shareOMGgos!!! Busted!! It copied a movie from the future.
shareI don't think it was the intent of those of us remarking on the similarity between the two films to imply that "Brainstorm" was copying "Strange Days" (which, it preceded by 12 years)--just that the two films were similar. Both films copy ideas that have been present in science fiction writing for a long while anyway.
shareyou could assume that strange days takes placeinthe same universe only a fewdecadeslater.
shareI think Strange Days makes a great "sequel" so to speak. Brainstorm is where they conceive and develop the technology. Strange Days is where the technology has matured and is in practical, albeit illegal use.
shareExactly! I always viewed "Brainstorm" as the prequel to "Strange Days."
