music piano piece

Hey Y'all

Does anyone know which music piece Natalie Wood practices with her chamber-music colleagues whenever Christopher Walken first enters the house and greets her "boyfriend"? I think it's a classic piece - not a piece by James Horner.

Any help would be appreciated!

It's been a while since I've seen it but the piece played all through the film is part of a piano quintet (I think) called The Trout by Schubert.

I agree, the piece she was playing with her musical friends WAS the "Trout Quintet", by Schubert.

The piece "Michael's Gift To Karen" is included on the soundtrack LP, cassette and CD and is credited solely to James Horner. There are no indications that anyone other than Horner himself wrote it.

It's a great piece of music - and a great James Horner score. If you go to the Quicktime website, view the "Superman Returns" trailer #2 and it uses about 15 seconds of this musical piece ("Michael's Gift to Karen") mid-trailer. It's kinda' sad that this piece has been reduced to trailer stock music :(

And undoubtedly Natalie playing as well. She was actually an accomplished pianist--astounding Robert Benton once when she played the theme song from Oliver on a child's piano when he was visiting Warren Beatty. I remember reading she also did this on the set of one of her movies as a child, playing a very complicated piece of music on a regular piano and all the adults standing around were amazed.

Some of the best film music is used many more times in trailers.

John Ottman also rips the same segment of Brainstorm you are referring to in the score for Superman Returns.
