O'Brian can't read?

O'Brian can't read the chalkboard in class or the paperback in his cell but reads the names on the work detail list quite well! Seem odd?

I always thought that a lot of them were faking/pretending they couldn't read. It's typical BS that delinquents do to act tough by pretending they're dumb.

No, it may be that he can't read those words. Maybe names are easier for him because he knows who they are at the point he is reading them.
