How did Stef get a job at the steel mill?

The town is falling apart, unemployment's up, even Stef's brother gets the boot. But after Stef blows his chance at a scholarship, he suddenly has a job at the mill that is laying everyone off. Did I miss something, or is it just lazy writing?

reply

Stef's dad got him the job. He told his ex-teammate
at the party where everybody jumps on the table
after drinking beer. He said his dad pulled some
strings.

reply

OK thanks, lazy writing then. His dad can pull some strings for him, but his brother's left out in the cold. Not to mention that the laid off guys would be waiting outside the mill to kick the asses of both Pop and Son.

reply

The mill where steph is working is being torn down/dimantled. steph is part of the crew cleaning up the debris. he's not working in an active steel mill.

reply

OK great, if he's working for the company demolishing the mill then I missed something. Thanks. And to the other poster who said I was just nitpicking, I say nonsense. If the brother gets laid off at the mill and our protagonist gets a job there after blowing his scholarship, that's just lazy writing. Well, absent some plot line that has steel demand suddenly skyrocketing and all laid off workers suddenly being called back and then some.

reply

He didn't get a job at the mill. He got a job with a demolition company that happened to be starting a project at the mill.

Not that it matters, you're just silly nitpicking.

reply

That's not nitpicking if it's actually true. His brother having gotten laid off and him suddenly working there would be atrociously lazy writing.

But he wasn't working at the mill as has been said.

but his brother was working with him when it showed him tearing down the mill.

his father got them both jobs.

I grew up near a major pharmaceutical plant. The smell was unbearable when they made prescription vitamins. At one time they were a great employer. Almost everyone wanted to work there. Then they started laying off full-time employees. But the plant kept running with temporary and/or part-time staff. That is how a lot of corporations save a fortune on labor and make big profits. I figured the mill in "All The Right Moves" was also using temps and/or part-timers.
