It was slightly profitable, at least. It made a little over seven million, but only cost about five million to make.

"Sure. You've never been?"
Plus the film probably made more internationally at least.
shareCertainly.

I remember seeing this at the theater with my family. We all thought that this was a really good movie, but it didn't seem to get well known until it hit HBO / Cinemax a year later.
shareYour family must be quite liberated. I love this film, but I think I'd rather see it alone because of the violence and sexual content. ;-)
shareAgreed. This is not a film you sit down and watch with grandma.
(or, if you do, please keep that to yourself)

Wait a minute... who am I here?
What I do with Grandma on my own time is my own DAMN business!!!
And the fact that she is dressed as a pirate is NOBODY'S damn business!
I have over 4000 films, many of them very rare and OOP. I LOVE to trade. PLEASE ASK!
Bronson was a major star internationally. I'm sure overseas his movies were real money makers out of America.
shareProbably. In Europe Bronson was a big name.

dont forget this is the 80's, the video era. Millions on video alone worldwide. You combine that all its hell of alot. Rental nowadays dont get what they did back in the 80's
shareI can't really say because I've never heard its results since summer, 1983 when they would have been complete. But I do have a story on it similair to falloutboy73's. My mother, sister, and I went to the Cinema in Rock Hill, SC to see Rocky III in March, 1983, and I saw a poster for it in the lobby with coming attractions, and that it has Lisa Eilbacher in it. I showed that to my sister, because we'd just gotten An Officer and a Gentleman on VHS and watched it alot on out VCR, and she really liked her in it. She immidiently seemed interested and asked our mother about it, but she was not interested and just brushed it off, saying, "I don't know". We then went on into the movie, but two months later, in mid May, 1983 my mother and sister were discussing what movie they could maybe go see, and my sister had out local paper's movie listings there, and from it gave some suggestions. She first said, "Ten to Midnight at the PIX with Lisa Eilbacher". Our mother then said a firm and clear, "No". My sister then said allright, and said, "Breathless at the Cinema with Richard Gere". She then said, a little hesitantly, "I don't think so". That too came from An Officer and a Gentleman, but weather it did well at the box office or not, had it been up to my sister it would have done a little better, but because of our mother it did not. We then never rented it out and saw it on our VCR later.

I was a theater manager back in the day and can remember this film sold out on weekends for at least the first two weeks. Of course most Bronson films attracted big audiences on opening weekends back then.
shareThis movie probably cost less than $5 milion to produce so Cannon would have seen a profit. It was a big renter on video in Australia too during the 80's.
shareIt's amazing that this film did so well in its opening weekends and on video because I've never heard of it until recently. I wish I had seen it in the '80s, but I'm glad I saw it now.
sharePretty successful for a 1980s exploitation film. factor in that Charlie was hot again off the first death wish sequel, so factor in foreign markets, vhs, and cable this was one was a winner.

He was a big name in The US back then too! He was one of the biggest action stars of his time....probably comparable to Bruce Willis or Jason Statham later.

Golan-Globus found a market from video rentals and video sales.
Release the film in cinemas but the money was in the video market.
