Iola and Thelma Were So Far Apart In Age

They seemed like contemporaries, but they weren't. Iola was Vint's age. Thelma was Iola's only friend - her words. In the flashback episode, Iola was 8 or 9, and Thelma was a full-grown mother. Who would have thought these two would become future bosom buddies?

I don't think Iola was necessarily a misfit, I think she just had interests more in common with Mama...like sewing, crafting, etc.....

Again, when it comes to friendships, things like interests, personality, etc... trump AGE.

Like at first Iola had a great friendship with Arlene who was closer to Iola's age, b/c they liked the same things, only when Iola got to be too smothering was Arlene put off.

Cannot disagree with that last point more. She's like the worst wife imaginable.

Personality can trump biology in many ways.

I think for Mama ,she thought of Iola as the daughter she never had!! I know Thelma had daughters, Ellen and Eunice, but Mama had more in common with Iola than her own daughters.

I always thought it was interesting that Thelma and Iola were best friends despite their age difference.
