Mama's favorite child

The show pushed the narrative that Ellen was Mama's favorite, but I think she was more of a "trophy" child. Despite how callous, critical and even quasi-abusive she was to Vint, I think he was Mama's actual 'favorite.'

Thoughts?

Well Vint was her BABY child, so I think she felt she had to look out for him more.

I think she had a different kind of relationship with all of them, and I dunno if she had an actual favorite.

I think she liked Ellen b/c she saw all the life she HERSELF could have lived, had maybe she made different choices.

I think she was so critical of Eunice, b/c she saw all of her own mistakes in Eunice.

It's like Ellen represented all of Mama's unrealized potential, and Eunice represented all of Mama's mistakes.

Vint was the baby, so I think she coddled him more.

I agree about Vint. Vint was the hapless immature one who always needed his mama. Ellen was usually strong and independent while Eunice was wonderfully unlikeable to everyone.

Eunice... gotta love her!

Rashomama was one of the best episodes - with each of the girls takes of the scenario being different, how they feel Mama acts, and their views of the others involved.

Naomi's was probably the most accurate of scenarios - however she embellished how polite she was. But the characteristics of Eunice and Ellen were more on par with their actual shenanigans throughout the series.

Eunice perceived Ellen as a tiara wearing princess diva, and Naomi as a lurid romance novel personified.

Whereas Ellen cranked up Eunice's tantrums tenfold and perceived Naomi as a dimwitted child.
