How did she come to be Mrs Harper best friend? In beginning it's clear she's closer to being the son's age, even having a crush on him.
Now watching an episode of them as kids and how she was interested in him from jump.
I don't think friendship has an age-limit. Thelma and Iola both had similar interests, hobbies, etc...so that is how they become such good friends.
shareIola seemed like a replacement for Aunt Fran. Aunt Fran was Mama's younger spinster sister. Iola, like Aunt Fran, was a spinster herself. Mama and Iola weren't sisters, but BFFs.
shareI agree that she did sorta replace Fran, but I think Iola was better b/c she gave Mama a life OUTSIDE her family.
