Well in the beginning in the early 80's. HBO only had one channel. I dont think they started splitting up there channels until they wanted to show the adult stuff in the middle of the day.

Back in the 80s when this was on I was in my teens. HBO didn't show anything R rated before 8 pm and had a lot of good shows and movies for kids and teens rated G and PG and later PG-13 movies that ran in the mornings and afternoon.

Hbo still shows kids shows in the morning, and they had softcore stuff back then as well, although cinemax was known more for that (and you could het cinemax as part of your Hbo package)
