Doc and Sprocket = Wallace and Gromit

I was watching this show recently and came to the realization that the Wallace and Gromit characters were probably inspired by Doc and Sprocket. You have an absent minded and somewhat crazy inventor and his more sensible dog pet. Gromit is a bit more intelligent than Sprocket, but no less sympathetic.

But in the UK, Nick Park would not have known who Doc was. The human actor sections of the show were different in different countries and the UK had (initially) an old Scottish lighthouse keeper.
