Anchor Bay

Well, because I'm really not sure about the status of a DVD release of CHIEFS, I thought I'd figure out who to contact about this. After viewing the excellent special edition of SHOGUN, I saw that paramount released both the VHS and DVD version of that mini-series. So after discovering that Starmaker/Anchor Bay released the VHS version of CHIEFS I decided to look up the Anchor Bay website.

I've never heard of Starmaker, but Anchor Bay is well-known. So I went to the "Contact Us" area and under the category of TV-to-DVD, I sent them an email respectfully requesting they release a full version of CHIEFS on DVD, if possible.

I'll let you know if I receive any word back. In the meantime it might help for others who want to see the film on DVD to do the same.

In fact this is the page:

Well, that was a bust! Just got word from Anchor Bay they no longer have rights to CHIEFS title! Of course they didn't say who does. But I'll figure it out.

I think that Ted Turner has the rights to that movie. I have always wanted to get a copy of it myself.

reply

I hope you're right...Turner knows how to take care of these type of films. I'd love to see him release it on DVD. You'd think he would show it on one of his networks.

Anchor Bay losing the rights to Chiefs is not a bad thing. Ask any 21 Jump Street fan about what Anchor Bay did to that series. Anchor Bay is not a fan favorite.

reply

Actually, Anchor Bay is a fan favorite for movies; they've released a lot of obscure titles in nice condition with lovely extras.
There have been some hiccups on TV releases -- the first season of Roseanne wasn't uncut episodes, for instance, but that's because that is what the production company gave them to work with. havent heard of any Jump Street complaints, but they may be out there.
But no need to denigrate one of the good companies out there. If they got hold of Chiefs, we'd all be lucky. they'd do it right.

There has been nothing but complaints from Jump Street fans about Anchor Bay and Cannell and how they have mishandled the release of this title and completely screwed the fans. Like holding back Johnny Depp's final episode in season4 and putting it in the season 5 box so you would have to buy that box too. There packaging and conduct has been consistantly misleading, dishonest and cheap. It may be technically legal, but it is very far from ethical.

And while season 1 had several extras - the rest had none. Oh, and they've cut out all the popular music used in the series. While this is actually understandable because it would have to be relicensed and would often have cost a fortune -- they could have let the fans know about it with a line on the packaging or hell, they could have even replaced it with new music that had the same feel -- but they did not. They sometimes didn't replace it with anything at all. And sometimes it's REAL noticeable like when Booker says he likes a song and there has been nothing but SILENCE from his stereo.

Don't try to tell me Anchor Bay cares about the fans. That is not their top priority. Sure, they want to market what they have and make some money. I have no problem with that. I have serious problems with the slimy and cheap way they do it.
