would have worked better as an anniversary TV movie

Such an idea to reunite a classic is great but it was far too soon. Just like "Joey" in recent times, something that has taken a special magic is very hard to replace (only possible exceptions, e.g. Frasier). However I suppose it can be said that this production put a stop to any possible reunion movies over the years since the original show. A real shame as the cast are still alive.

A TV movie reuniting the cast in 1987 would have worked nicely as a 15th anniversary special and then maybe some others in the 90s and even to this day.

Why do you think a reunion show couldn't have been done? They could have still done a movie where everybody from the 4077th were reunited. Like in the M*A*S*H episode "The Party", where the families all got together at a reunion dinner. They could have done something like that but with the actual 4077th members attending with their families this time instead of just the families. Just a thought.

i agree, i think a 2hr reunion movie would have been better and had them all getting together in like hawaii or california and show what they have been up to and have some subplots of family issues etc.. instead of the mess this series was and also speaking of messy spinoffs, look at W*A*L*T*E*R the failed pilot for the afterwar adventures of Radar.

both of these series just tried to play it more for silliness and laughs.
unappealing characters and bad dialog. especially WALTER - i watched the failed pilot on youtube and it was terrible. basically reducing gary burghoff to a police academy type stooge.
