Why was Murdock crazy?

He was eccentric, but did they ever mention a specific episode that got him sent to the VA hospital? He seemed to be sane enough when it suited him, but being a bit out there shouldn't be enough to get you sent there. I would think it would have to be something big to get sent there, was it ever mentioned?

reply

It was a rouse(sp). He needed a place to hide, so he wasn't wanted with the rest of the team.

RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

reply

His experiences in the war were a major factor, but seeing what happened to his friends as the war was ending probably contributed also. See the VA people at the start of season 5's "Firing Line", they mention him being very upset at his friends being sentenced to death.

Possibly.

RIP Gene Wilder. One of the funniest people of all time. RIP Matt Roberts. You were great.

reply

Never mentioned but implied that something happened in Nam.

My own theory is that he was perfectly sane...but had some baggage given his experiences in Vietnam. His eccentric behavior was a coping mechanism, imo. But, he was still clever enough to play it up in order to get free room and board at the VA.

Definitely, Average.

I don't think it was a rouse. here's why. If he was wanted by the Army, he wouldn't be eligible for VA benefits to begin with. so either he was caught for the bank robbery and found insane (not likely), or he wasn't involved at all with it and just knew the rest of the guys earlier. I'm betting he'd been their insertion aircraft pilot on several occasions. I'm basing that on an episode where they went to a military funeral, and all of them are in uniform. the other three all have various insignia denoted them as special forces infantry, but Murdock does not. idk if the writers intended to make it clear one way or the other if i'm dead wrong lol.

as for why, I think the writers also left that ambiguous. could he have crashed a bird and troops lives were lost? depression from the death penalty sentences? maybe he flew a casualty bird and just saw too much death and trauma? there's a hundred different reasons why even a fly-boy like Murdock might lose it. that's if he was really even crazy...

reply

I think he was faking it, just to get free room and board.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. RIP William Christopher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

What do u base that on? Have you ever been in the secured psych ward of a VA hospital? Just trying to see where your perspective is coming from.

reply

It's just obvious. He just acts crazy to annoy BA. In an early episode when Murdock gave BA his blood, even Hannibal said he wasn't really crazy.

reply

Hannibal said blood can't pass crazy. And there are too many times away from BA that he acts a fool. Even stuff he does alone he's a damn nut. And as much as he loves flying and wants to continue doing it legally, it doesn't benefit him to fake being mentally ill. Free room and board in a VA psych ward isn't enough for a guy like Murdock to give up the life he wants. It just isn't enough.

You're a grown man and allowed to think whatever you want, no matter how wrong it is. You can refuse to accept correction if you want. But you are no more man than anybody else to "take action", or whatever you call it. You must've lost your mind, trying to school a veteran on something like this, even if it is fiction. I was gonna let you have the last word till you said what you said. You wanna put you tv trivia knowledge against my knowledge of the service, combat and how it affects a man, the VA and it's mental health care, and what a captain would do? Be my guest, make yourself look like a fool. I been nothing but polite and cordial to you, but you wanna go and act like this. Smh, very well...

reply

You are the one who refuses to accept correction, ic. I've already told you that Hannibal said he wasn't crazy. He knows him more than we do. Who should I believe, Hannibal or some guy on this board thumping his chest?

I too was polite and cordial, but you wouldn't agree with me, so that time is now over. I don't appreciate people not respecting me.

That was my doppelganger, Ic. Not me. Look at the imdb member since under the screen name. Don't be fooled.

I got you. I saw the I instead of the J, but I just thought it was a font thing in my notification email. He got me lol.

He's a lowlife, Ic.
