In a deleted scene he was found pinned to a wall with a pitchfork Michael Myers style, so it’s possible he was always meant to have been murdered.
Makes you wonder why the thing would murder somebody like that. I speculate a human stricken with insane paranoia must've done it.

My guess is Fuchs offed himself.
It may have been done by Blair before he was infected by the Thing. Though that deleted scene just mentioned maybe from an alternate version of the film. That is quite different from the film we got in the theatrical version.
shareIt's interesting that they filmed alternate deaths for certain characters. Perhaps they intended to use this alternate death for a TV version.
I noticed that Palmer's transformation was originally different. His head came off and a tiny head grew from his neck.
